Overview
A file-history panel for VS Code. Open any file, hit the shortcut, and step through every commit that touched it on a horizontal timeline, with syntax-highlighted, word-level diffs for each step.
- Horizontal commit timeline with keyboard stepping
- Rename-aware history across
git mvand detected renames - Compare any two commits side by side
- Pickaxe search: find the commit that added or removed a string
What it solves
The popular git-history extensions either cap how much history you can see, push you toward a paid tier, or phone home. The built-in timeline lists commits but makes you open each diff one at a time, and loses the trail the moment a file was renamed.
Git Rewind does the one job well and stays local: it runs plain git, has no external services and no telemetry, and follows the file wherever it moved.
Highlights
- Word-level diffs highlighted with Shiki in the current theme
- Conventional Commits cues: coloured stripes per commit type
- Filter by author, message, or SHA, plus
git log -Spickaxe search - Per-file memory of the last commit you were looking at
